The art of ‘roasting’ has been around for quite some time now. Dean Martin made roasting a popular event in 1974 with a series of celebrity roasts and from there it really took off. The aim of a roast is to be both funny and abusive.
The goal is to have one willing subject to be the centre of the roast who’s there to be ridiculed, mocked and humoured Nowadays, the roasting is taken to extreme heights with some of the most brutal putdowns and close to the bone insults.
Comedy Central has kept the art of the roasts alive with the Comedy Central Roasts and Roast Battle which pits two comedians against each other in an epic joke duel.
The gay community has the epic ‘Reading Is Fundamental’ challenge on RuPaul’s Drag Race where drag queens insult each other’s talent/looks/personality etc. But they don’t call it roasting, they call it ‘reading’.
Now, being insulted is never fun, however, do it with some quick wit and clever observations and almost all can be forgiven. But who would want to subject themselves to such abuse?
